KRSKO
If we draw the curtains of time and peer through our contemporary window into history, we will see that Krško has for a long time been an important strategic location of the Lower Sava Valley (Posavje in Slovene). Even today, castle after castle adorns the region and one could easily spend an entire day in the company of their exciting legends and illustrious residents. Even though the Trappist monks, the most notable occupants of Rajhenburg Castle took a vow of silence, they were brimming with entrepreneurial energy. They were the first in Slovenia to have focused it on industrial production of chocolate, which they began making and selling in the 19th century. Having reached the mighty castle overlooking the Sava, you can replenish your energy with a piece of exquisite chocolate. The Trappists were great innovators: they bought the first tractor and brought progress to the Lower Sava Valley by building the only hydroelectric plant for miles around.
At the foot of Rajhenburg Castle hill, important routes and waterways meet, so it is little wonder that what is today known as the Old Town soon developed at this location. Strolling down its streets and drawing creative energy from them were the authors of some of Slovenia’s earliest books. Those passionate about religious art will surely be impressed by ‘Slovenian Lourdes’ and the brilliant Hočevar Mausoleum made of white stone. (www.visitkrsko.com)
